After Ethan’s cheer competition in Memphis, we drove to Gatlinburg, TN for the week.

We rented a huge cabin with a playroom on the bottom floor and a hot tub on the balcony.

We enjoyed spending the week with Adam and Nancy, family friends, who came along with us.

The highlights for me were a walk in the National Smoky Mountains Park, a 2 hour zip line coarse, and an adventure ride with the boys on a 4-wheeler we rented.

One big takeaway for me was the “Wild at Heart” theme, which comes from a book I read over 10 years ago. I recently revisited that book and it’s sequel. The “wild at heart” theme came alive for me while on this trip.

The basic premise is that us guys (and I believe many woman) are born with a wild heart.

Boys grow up searching for adventure, and us dads need to nurture that wild heart rather than stifle it.

I want to follow my heart into the wild, which for me goes way beyond taking a hike in the mountains. It means meeting new people, being a more engaged father/husband, being a YEA mentor to a group of 6th graders, and taking risks in my business. It means soon getting certified as a scuba diver with my 2 boys. It means not playing it safe. Taking risks. Leaning into fear and uncertainty.

Here are some of the pics from our trip.

We rented this 4-wheeler, and I drove it like a crazy person in some trails in the woods.

I was doing some donuts when it tipped over, and we came crashing down on the left side. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Unfortunately, I had to pay a $1,000 damage fee. Yikes! Hey, but we still had fun!

Chloe, my daughter’s friend in the neighborhood, just happened to be visiting Gatlinburg with her family. We bumped into them at Ober.
